Lead-Contaminated Candy From Mexico Recalled in U.S.
Saturday, May 02, 2009

CALEXICO, Calif. — A food distribution company in Calexico is recalling candy imported from Mexico because it contains high levels of lead.
King Midas Inc. said Friday it is warning stores to stop selling Hola Pop, a caramel lollipop with a salted apricot in the center. The candy also comes in other fruit flavors.

The company says recent analysis of Hola Pop by the California Department of Public Health found that the candy contained a high level of lead.
Pregnant women and parents of children who may have consumed an Hola Pop candy are advised to consult their doctor to determine whether they should undergo medical testing.

Service Learning is an important component of the curriculum at Valley View. So one day, when Principal John Wann was lazing around just thinking of more stuff for the faculty to do and he decided that the staff needed to model Service Learning in our neighborhood. Jim Fowler Visits Valley View

Many of your teachers used to watch Wild Kingdom on TV when Jim Fowler co-hosted the show with Marlin Perkins. His television career with animals has spanned 40 years.

(Right) Dr. Fowler massages the young aligators belly until the alligator goes to sleep in the Valley View cafeteria.

Today, Jim Fowler is president of the Fowler Center for Wildlife Education in New York and serves as the honorary president of the Explorers Club.

Dr. Fowler's mission is to get people to think about preserving and protecting animals and the places where they live.

"The continued existence of wildlife and wilderness is important to the quality of life of humans. Our challenge for the future is that we realize we are very much a part of the earth's ecosystem, and we must learn to respect and live according to the basic biological laws of nature."

— Jim Fowler

Backbone Campaign - Our Own Lise Spangenthal

Thanks to our resident social justice activist, Lise Spangenthal, Valley View students played hosts to members of the Procession for the Future who will be traveling over 9000 miles with their recycled polar bear, Snowflake. The primary purpose for their visit was to "protest against Sheriff Arpaio who is terrorizing immigrants and people of color with night raids, arrests, and marching immigrant prisoners dressed in full prison gear through the middle of the city, in the heat of the day."

It's that time of year again - Test Time!

Now that we are a Performing Plus School, we have to keep up our reputation. Parents can help your kids and teachers so much during this time with daily structure and encouragement. Children need structure in their lives. They need to get up at the same time and go to bed at the same time everyday. Children need to eat balanced meals with protein, fruits and vegetables.
